Normal test results but with acne and hair loss? A doctor explains
Video in Spanish · subtitles available
«My tests are normal, but I still have acne and my hair is falling out.» I explain in this video why that is not a contradiction: normal does not mean we have looked into the cause of your symptoms.
«My blood work is normal, but I still have acne and my hair is falling out.» That is one of the phrases I hear most often in my practice. In this video I explain why there is no contradiction: a normal blood panel means that the parameters measured fall within reference ranges — not that we have investigated the cause of your symptoms. I review the role of androgens and testosterone, the importance of SHBG and the available fraction, follicular sensitivity (miniaturization), androgenetic alopecia with normal androgen levels, telogen effluvium, PCOS, and insulin resistance. The best blood panel is not the one with the most parameters, but the one that answers the right clinical question.
